The Best Practice Unit currently provides the following training courses:

We can also broker other courses for organisations such as Managing Challenging Behaviours. We are also developing new courses such as Asset Management.

Risk Management

Learning Outcomes:

• Prepare your organisation for Regulation by implementing a Risk Management strategy based on the National Community Housing Standards.
• Provides an introduction to CHCWA's 'Safe as Houses' Risk Management Toolbox, an outcomes based paper and electronic risk management system.
• Explores implementation strategies for organisations.
• Familiarise yourself with the National Community Housing Standards, the key benchmark for regulation.
• Simplify Risk Management by breaking down the operations of Community Housing Organisations into assessable sections based on the National Standards.

Asset Management

Learning Outcomes

• Asset Management in the National Community Housing Standards
• Planning effectively for long term maintenance
• Develop Asset Registers and budgets for cyclical and long term maintenance
• Monitoring contracts and working effectively with Contractors

Developing Policies and Procedures

Learning Outcomes:

• Identify the role of policies and procedures.
• Develop a clear process for writing them.
• Write clear and friendly policies.
• Examine the pre-requisties for effective implementation.
• Monitoring and reviewing policies and procedures.
• Involve appropriate people in developing policies and procedures.

Rent Setting

Learning Outcomes:

• Identify that rent setting policies are critical to financial viability.
• Examine the funding and regulatory requirements that shape rent setting policy.
• Explore different scenarios to familiarise yourself with Rent Setting.
• Learn how to assess income.
• Use the CHCWA Rent Setting spreadsheet to capture maximum Commonwealth Rent Assistance.

SAAP Service Standards

Learning Outcomes:

• Describes the role of the standards and their importance to a range of stakeholders.
• Understand your role in the implementation of the SAAP standards; and have an understanding of the importance of developing written policies and procedures to support their implementation.
• Use the self assessment tool to inform your development of action plans.
• Devise strategies to overcome barriers to implementation, and work with others to develop the best possible service to your clients.
