Our origins

The clear need for a single independent voice for the community housing industry  on national issues led to the establishment of the Community Housing Industry Association in 2015.

CHIA’s founders wanted to create a member-funded organisation that could leverage the expertise and resources of the network of state and territory peak bodies to support the sector and improve the quality of housing and other services provided to community housing tenants throughout Australia.

CHIA’s board is headed by Chair Michael Lennon and peopled by committed executives of housing organisations from throughout Australia with extensive experience in affordable housing.

John is CEO of Bridge Housing and has held senior positions in the NSW Government and the community services sector.

Geoff is leads the housing and development activities of the Julia Farr Housing Association and is the Chair of the Community Housing Council in SA.

Jed is employed by The Salvation Army as the state’s housing and homelessness manager in Tasmania.

Jillian is the CEO and Company Secretary of Venture Housing Company and took out the 2014 Telstra Business Women’s Award in the Community and Government and Innovation categories.

Stephen is Head of Risk and Compliance and Company Secretary of Community Housing Canberra and is an expert in matters of corporate governance.

Our staff

CHIA’s day-to-day operations are headed by our highly-experienced CEO Peta Winzar, backed by a small team spread throughout Australia.

Peta Winzar has more than 20 years’ experience as a senior executive in the Commonwealth public service, including policy development and ministerial advisory roles.

Peta is a member of the Federal Government’s three-person Expert Panel, which is developing a bond aggregator to attract institutional investment in affordable housing.

Kate Robertson

Media & Communications Manager

Kate Robertson is an experienced journalist and corporate communications specialist who is able to harness more than 25 years experience on both sides of the media fence to assist organisations to utilise the power of positive publicity.

Kate is responsible for internal and external communications strategy for CHIA, and also performs the same role for CHIA Victoria.

Barry Doyle

WA Project Director

Barry works exclusively on behalf of the WA membership.

Prior to joining CHIA in 2015, Barry was the Executive Officer of the Community Housing Coalition of WA, the state peak body for community housing.

Shelly Forceville

Administration Officer

Shelly has worked with the national community housing peak body providing administrative support, for nearly 10 years.

Shelly anchors CHIA’s administrative services to CHIA with a focus on member support.
