CHIA published our second community housing profile this month. It has been compiled from the records of 102 of the largest registered community housing organisations, which together deliver an estimated 96% of all community housing. The data presented are for the 2020/21 financial year.

The report shows that CHOs manage more than 122,130 housing tenancies with an average rent of just $172.50 per week. About 83 per cent were forms of social housing, accounting for 27 per cent of all social housing provision in Australia, up from a 12 per cent share in 2010. Around 40,000 of these homes were owned by CHOs, with the rest managed for state housing authorities or private owners.

This is the only national profile available and can only be put together through hard work of many individuals mining multiple data sources. We are especially grateful to Prof Vivienne Milligan who has led this work for two years.

We would be very pleased to receive feedback as we start compiling the next edition.

At some point we hope that the Commonwealth, state and territories can agree on a single regulatory regime and also accept a definition of community housing organisation that recognises that it cannot include ‘for profit’ entities are unregistered providers.
